Awards Show slated at Big Mama's Karaoke Cafe
And then there were forty-nine. As the voting closed when the clock struck midnight for the first minute of 2010, the Popular Choice winners of Big Mama’s Back Stage Knoxville Battle of the Bands 2009 were set in stone. But the Professional’s Choice winners are still a mystery.
Pop Choice winners Avid Addiction, Big Trouble and Afterlife are already assured of their place in history, after bringing in the top number of in-person and online votes during the competition. They’ve each won a prize package that includes retail-ready DVDs and CDs and studio time to cut their next release.
But the three bands chosen by the jury of industry pros are still unknown, and won’t be revealed until the night of the awards show, February 9, to be held at Big Mama’s Karaoke Café in Seymour, TN. Event spokesperson David Grimes, Director of Public Relations for Big Mama Digital Entertainment, says that the voting still hasn’t been decided.
“The scores are only partially compiled at this time,” Grimes said, “and one judge has asked for more time to review the performances. Right now, no one knows who the winning bands will be.” After a look at the online videos posted for each band, it’s easy to see why the judges are still working through the scoring process. Nonetheless, event officials are certain that clear winners will emerge.
“Our juried process is resistant to ties,” Grimes said, “and a tie-breaking protocol is provided for as well.” He also said that among the industry pros who are judging the competition, each is concentrating on his or her area of expertise. “One judge might be scoring on the musical chops of a band, while another is looking at the overall performance and showmanship, another at the marketability of the band, and so on,” Grimes said.
“That tends to not only award bands for all aspects of their performances, but also to enhance the scores of bands that really try to bring the whole package.” The three Pro Choice wining bands will enjoy studio time, as well as retail-ready DVDs and CDs. Expect them to make good use of those prizes. |

Big Mama’s Backstage to honor winners in 2009 Knox Battle of the Bands Big Mama’s Backstage and Big Mama’s Karaoke Café have announced the date for their Third Annual Knox Battle of the Bands Awards Show, to be held at Big Mama’s Karaoke Café in Seymour, TN. The event will be held on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, as the venue will bring together the best of the best of all the bands that competed in the 2009 summer-long contest. Voting is still ongoing in the tightly-contested race, which allows the general public to view online videos and cast ballots for their favorites at www.knoxbotb.com. Among the fifty bands vying for the top three spots among the popular vote, the current leaders are Greeneville hard rock-heavy metal powerhouse Avid Addiction, Maryville blues-rock blasters Big Trouble, and Knoxville alt-metal monsters Afterlife. In addition to the popular vote, a jury of industry professionals will also select three bands as their top choices. Each of the three bands in both categories will receive a prize package valued at thousands of dollars, to include studio time, and retail-ready CDs and DVDs of their performances. “Our third year of Big Mama’s Backstage Knox Battle of the Bands was our best ever,” said Norbert Stovall, CEO of Big Mama Digital Entertainment. “As we’ve grown what’s become the premier showcase for new music talent in the area, we’ve continued to upgrade our fantastic outdoor venue and make the experience even bigger and better for both the audience and the bands that play here.” “As we draw closer to the awards ceremony, we expect to see the online voting become fast and furious,” Stovall noted. “Based on our experience in previous years, you may see the lead change quite often, as each band kicks their fan base into high gear.” More than three hundred bands have fought for prime placement throughout the history of the contest, which has awarded more than $36,000 in prizes to local and regional up-and-coming bands, as well as widened their reach by assisting with their promotion and marketing.
